Liverpool have reached five Champions League finals in the past 19 years, winning two of them.

But the Red Devils also have an illustrious past in Europe's second tournament.

As they look to add to their history in tonight's Europa League last-16 first leg against Sparta Praha, we decided it was time to go back in time to 2001.

Gérard's iconic Red Devils Houllier won a Treble knockout match that year, completing their achievement by defeating Alaves 5-4 on the golden goal rule in a dramatic UEFA Cup final in Dortmund.

This is the famous team that achieved this feat.

Goalkeeper Dutch goalkeeper Sander Westerveld scored for Liverpool just before the club were eliminated.

Just four months after winning the treble, a mistake at Bolton forced Gerard Houllier into action, never lining up again and signing Jerzy Dudek instead.

Pegguy Arphexad is an alternative stopper.

Defense Center backs Stéphane Henchoz and Sami Hyypia form a cohesive pair, with the latter ranked 21st on the club's all-time players list.

Their partnership means young Jamie Carragher plays at left-back for Dortmund, while Markus Babbel is the goal-scoring right-back.

Gregory Vignal and Stephen Wright are on the bench.

Midfield A mix of local legends and nostalgic names, Houllier's midfield in this final is Liverpool's legacy.

Steven Gerrard is the standout name and this is a campaign in which he has established himself as a force at the heart of his boyhood team.

Gerrard scored the Red Devils' second goal but it was Gary McAllister's performance that was most synonymous with the match.

Scotland international signed on a free transfer in 2000 and contributed to their League Cup and FA Cup success, also scoring a 44-yard free-kick in a dramatic derby win Merseyside at Goodison Park.

And after scoring one goal and assisting three – including an all-important own goal – in that final, Liverpool fans remembered him fondly .

Dietmar Hamann and Danny Murphy were also in the Houllier engine room, all four playing every minute of the match.

Vladimir Smicer and Patrik Berger replaced the various starters, while Nicky Barmby was an unused substitute.

Attack Emile Heskey started in Liverpool's attack in his first season since signing from Leicester.

But this whole campaign is about Heskey's partner, Michael Owen.

The striker, still showing promise despite just turning 21, won the FA Cup final four days before this Alaves match, scoring twice in the final seven minutes to seal the victory.

won 2-1 against Arsenal in Cardiff.

Although he didn't score here, he assisted Gerrard and won the penalty taken by McAllister.

And his efforts won him the 2001 Ballon d'Or - the last Englishman to win the award.

Robbie Fowler also joined the mix under Houllier and scored after replacing Heskey in the second half.

But for all the Red Devils' firepower, it was Alaves' Delfi Geli who turned the goal into gold with his own goal, helping Houllier and his team win the UEFA Cup.
